Global Health and International Studies
The purpose of the Global Health and Human Diversity (GHHD) course is to provide students an opportunity to become more culturally competent and assist them in understanding how culture impacts the health of a person, family and community. The course also provides an opportunity to give humanitarian service that promotes self-empowerment of individuals and exposes students to global health and health disparity issues. The course interweaves the 'art and science' of nursing. GHHD (formally known as N400) is taught every spring term and is a required course for graduation. A culturally competent nurse possesses exceptional technical nursing and interpersonal skills, including true charity-the pure love of Christ. It is only when a nurse incorporates these skills together that he/she can practice the Healer's Art locally, nationally and globally at individual, family or community levels. These nursing skills are vital and are emphasized in professional standards and guidelines from the following documents: Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (BS Essentials) (AACN, 1998); Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice (ANA Standards) (ANA, 2004); Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2001); Utah Nurse Practice Act (Utah Code, 58-3`b, 2005); Nursing's Social Policy Statement (ANA, 2003). GHHD fully supports the mission and vision of the College of Nursing (CON). The mission statement of the College set the goal to develop professional nurses who:
The vision for the CON states: "We are a community of nursing scholars engaged in discovery and application of the Healer's art to strengthen health and healing worldwide and to enhance the discipline of nursing." One student explained, "We are not just treating the physical conditions people are having. This is certainly an important aspect of our job, but it is not the only part. As nurses, as healers, we have the responsibility of healing as our Savior did, not just treating."
It is the goal of the CON to ensure that every student can have an international nursing experience. For those unable to go internationally, wonderfully diverse opportunities are available in Utah. Each site allows students to practice nursing skills, touch people's lives and make a difference in the community. Sites are chosen carefully using the following criteria:
