Inner City (Refugees) 2011

 


Inner city clinical students learned about cultural competency by working with refugees in the Salt Lake City area. Students attended the Swahili Branch of the LDS church and were assigned to a family to visit and plan culturally competent nursing interventions. 

 

Students also worked at a daycare center for children of refugees. Other clinical sites included working in a free-volunteer clinic and a culturally diverse labor/delivery unit, hosting a booth at the International Rescue Committee Health Fair, teaching at a soccer clinic and working with a diabetes outreach program. As a group, students attended the Living Traditions event in Salt Lake they tried a variety of ethnic foods and watched craftsmen and folk dances. They als o met for several cultural experiences, including a Norwegian dinner and Japanese harp concert.

While they did not travel far, students learned that Salt Lake is very culturally diverse. The experiences from these activities and events encouraged everyone to practice cultural competency in their future nursing practice.

 
 

Student Reflections:

"I was never really aware of this immense population of refugees that existed here in the United States, let alone Utah. Now I feel like I have a connection to this population and I don't want to stop helping them just because the term is ending. Every time I encounter a refugee in my everyday life, I am inclined to ask them where they are from and what their story is. I have been amazed at the love, generosity, and happiness the people as a whole exude, and it is contagious."
